Biography Esteban Vicente 1903 - 2001

Esteban Vicente was born in Turegano, Province of Segovia, Spain in 1903. In 1921 he enrolled in the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid, stimulated by the traditions of the Masters, especially Velasquez, El Greco and Goya.
Vicente was lured to Paris in 1927, inspired and challenged by the excitement of the city's modern artistic activity. In 1936 he moved to New York City, directed solely to the personal pursuit of painting, supporting himself when necessary by teaching. Involved in the climate, physicality and passion of the 1950s, Vicente's work established him as an integral part of the New York School. The energy of the 1950s through 2000 expresses itself in the quality and focus of his painting, collage, drawing and sculpture.
